Brunei Gallery – 100 Years of SOAS University of London

The Graphical Tree were approached by the Brunei Gallery to produce graphics for their 100 Years of SOAS University exhibition. The exhibition celebrates the history of the university and highlights SOAS’s wider impact on many subjects. Think world history, scholarship, cultural preservation, politics, social development and the arts to name but a few. We are proud to say this was just one of many projects we have worked with the Brunei Gallery on.

The story of SOAS University of London is a rich one, encompassing intellectual pursuits, locations, resources and most of all, its people. This abundance of history and content meant a huge amount of print was required for the exhibition space. We were asked to produce graphics to cover all three floors of the gallery as well as the stairwells.

A total of 140 prints were produced for the show in a myriad of sizes. These ranged from A4 to large wall wraps measuring 4000 x 3000mm. Each graphic was produced using permanent self adhesive vinyl, ensuring they stayed fixed to the walls for the duration of the exhibition. In addition, we also produced 180 supporting description panels printed directly to 3mm foamex – a fire rated material suitable for public spaces.

All graphics and description panels were installed the weekend before the exhibition opened. A team of our installers and Brunei Gallery staff worked together to ensure prints were positioned in their correct locations. The larger pieces were fitted by The Graphical Tree as these big, sometimes difficult to install prints, had to be applied successfully. The smaller graphics, installed under our watchful eye, were applied by a combination of the gallery team, and our installers. A fantastic example of our collaborating with clients to get the best results.

The exhibition is a carefully considered mix of graphics, memorabilia and information covering the approximate 610sq metres of wall space. The huge amount of prints produced were vital to show off the rich breadth of history at SOAS to the full.
